What is the U3A?

It stands for 'The University of the Third Age'.

It's purpose is to:

  • Provide an opportunity for those over 50 and no longer in full time employment to meet in an environment which provides the opportunity of pursuing the philosophy of life long learning. Members are encouraged to feel a sense of belonging, and be valued for the contribution they make.
  • Hold a monthly meeting bringing all members together to transact any business, and to listen to monthly lectures.
  • Encourage members to develop interest groups, meeting on a regular basis, covering a wide range of interests.
  • Encourage members to participate in national debates and consultations that are presented in the organisation.
What is the Third Age?

"The First Age is Education"
"The Second Age is Career and Family"
"The Third Age is retirement - a time for enjoyment, fulfillment and personal development and the Fourth Age is Dependency".

When did the U3A start?

The U3A originated in France in 1972 where the 'Univerite de Troisiene Age' was founded by Toulouse University. The U3A in the UK was started by the creation of the Third Age Trust in 1982.

What is the Third Age Trust?

The Trust is the national representative body for the U3A movement in the UK, and provides a range of support services to U3As.

How are U3As organised?

The U3As are democratic, self-funded, self-managed organisations providing day-time education and leisure activities for retired men and women at minimal cost. They draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their members to organise study and activity groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. Between them the U3As offer over 300 subjects in such diverse fields as: art, foreign languages, music, life sciences, literature, poetry, theatre-going, philosophy, world faiths, crafts, field studies, archaeology, bird-watching and computing.

Who can join?

Anyone over 50, not in fulltime employment - all you need is interest and enthusiasm. It is called a University, but it has members, not students.
